This year is def exciting for us because we get to go to New York and Los Angeles for the IMATS Shows, so for all who will be attending, WE WILL SEE YOU THERE!

A few things on the list for 2011 is that the we've got a NEW 17 piece Natural set for $85.00. This is great for those starting off who want to get a full set but can't afford the 21 piece.

Also, the 17 piece synthetic brush set in RED will be returning in end of February, it's been out of stock $55.00

I finally got back from the IMATS show on Monday evening and BOY AM I TIRED! I must say that as hectic as the show was, I had an amazing time. The special effects makeup was amazing to watch and the student competition was fierce!! My most memorable moment was when I got a chance to meet Ms. RenRen at my booth. She was as adorable in person as she is on the videos. LOVE LOVE LOVE HER! <3<3<3

Last night I had the great pleasure of hanging out with my best girlfriend, Ms. Thucelle. After a few cocktails (or maybe more than a few LOL) we got to talking about how our style were so different. I've been buying makeup sets for a while and I would never use the reds, copper, or purple lip colors because I thought it made my lips look too big. I stated that I couldn't pull off the red or bright lips because of my complexion BUT she argued that she could totally see me wearing a brick red color and she hopes to try to get me away from my plain jane look. She also advises that it would be best that I not wear dark shadow since my lips will stand out. More emphasis on the lips and less on the eyes.

This morning (actually afternoon) I woke up and decided to prove her wrong by digging out some lipsticks I bought a long time ago that I never wore. I am still not sure how I feel about the look...maybe I'm just not use to it yet but my boyfriend seems to like the fresh change. One thought that cross my mind was maybe I looked a little too Goth style with my dark hair, black shirt and red lips.

For a day look, I just did black eyeliner and shimmer cream shadow. I lined the corner innner corner of my eyes with shimmer, and applied mascara.
For an evening look, I would definitely have added false lashes.

Final conclusion: I rarely drift out of my comfort zone with my style and makeup because I remember what works for me and what doesn't. I think my phobia of bright red lipsticks may come from when I use to wear braces and didn't want anyone to notice my grills. So if I had to swallow my pride to say YES, I was completely wrong about the lipstick...I wouldn't have felt better about admitting it to any other person but my dear friend AND professional makeup artist. So there, lesson to be learned....don't argue with a makeup artist...or you'll have to swallow your pride. =D

Natural vs. Synthetic

The battle continues between natural and synthetic, and NO, I am not talking about female body parts! (Not that I would know anything about that anyways! ha ha)

I get tons of emails asking about the difference between natural and synthetic brushes quite often and I always tell people that it depends on preference and use. Whether you are a professional makeup artist for several years or someone just starting off you need to choose the right set of brushes to fit your individual needs.

When looking at brushes, you need to examine the three components: the handle, ferrule, and bristles. First, the handle is often made from wood but may also come in various materials such as plastic. The handle is usually the most appealing part because it can come in various colors and sizes. It should securely attach to the ferrule, which is often times made from aluminum. The ferrule is the key component that attaches the handle and the bristles together. And finally, the bristles are made from a variety of different materials ranging from animal hair to Taklon or nylon.

When referring to natural fibers, I am talking about fibers made from animals hairs such as sable, squirrel, pony, goat, badger, and other various combinations of fibers. When referring to synthetic fibers, I am talking about Taklon or nylon.

And so the battle begins!! So lets do a comparison shall we?

Natural fibers create a flawless finish with powder products such as powder, pressed eye shadows, and blush. Natural fibers are more popular with makeup professionals and enthusiast because of the ease of application as well as the flawless finish it creates with the makeup. Synthetic fibers provide a heavier coverage because the makeup doesn't stick on the synthetic fibers as it does the natural fibers. This is why the majority of your foundation, lipstick, and eyeliner brushes are almost always made from synthetic fibers. Ideal makeup application using synthetic fibers are the cream shadows, cream blushes, and gel eyeliners. This is a must-have if you are creating looks with these products because using natural fibers will cause stickiness and clumpy/lumpy application. Like I mentioned earlier, natural fibers likes to absorb the makeup.

Elle Bang provides both synthetic and natural fibers for you to choose from. We understand that some of you may have some reservation in using natural fibers while other prefer the natural fiber for it's superior application abilities. If you are a traditional user of powder products, the natural set will better suite your needs while those of you who like the "wet" or "dewy" look of the cream products, the synthetic set will definitely suite you best. And of course there is an option of having both sets so you can have your options open when you are getting ready for the day!

Personally I use the natural 21 piece set because the majority of my makeup products are powder. When using cream shadows I often use my finger tips just because I only use a shimmery base color for my everyday look.

Chicken Skin~YUK!!

Today I will be discussing Keratosis Pilaris, also know as KP, or even better "chicken skin." By the way, I always hated the term "chicken skin" when referring to this condition. Argh!

I bet some of you might think this topic is very random since KP is not something that I usually blog about. I have "chicken skin" on my arms and legs and have been researching that there are A LOT of other adolescents and adults suffering from this condition. I want to share how I manage my KP and hope that my methods might work for some of you.

I was watching the STYLE Channel on New Year's weekend while I was in Lake Tahoe and saw that there was a woman that was so distressed about having "chicken bumps" on her arms and legs that she frequently covered her arms by wearing long shirts or picked at them, which of course, cause them to look worse due to scarring. As I was watching this, I remembered in high school feeling so insecure about my arms too that I would cover them up or feel embarrassed if someone even looked at them or asked about them. Not truly understanding that it was a genetic condition (and feeling like I was the only one in the world having this issue) I did everything I could to try to get rid of them. I picked at them and applied all kinds of specialty lotions and products that I could find. I remember wrapping my arms and legs in plastic wrap after apply the lotions thinking that it would help penetrate my skin and possibly making them disappear FOREVER (it seem like a good idea when you were 15 years old and desparate).

Here is some background information for those of you not familiar with KP:

KP is a very common skin condition and worldwide, affects an estimated 40 to 50% of the adult population and approximately 50 to 80% of all adolescents. Varying in degree, cases of KP can range from minimal to severe.

Most people with keratosis pilaris don't know they have it and often confused with acne. Symptoms of KP resembles Goosebumps, it is characterized by the appearance of small, rough bumps primarily on the back and outer sides of the upper arms, but can also occur on thighs and buttocks or any body part except palms or soles.

Keratosis pilaris is unsightly but completely harmless. KP tends to be worse during the winter months or other times of low humidity when the skin dries out. It may also occur and/or worsen among pregnant women or show up after childbirth.

There is no cure for keratosis pilaris, since KP is a chronic, genetic follicular disease, however treatments are available.

For those of you who don't have to deal with this issue, COUNT YOUR BLESSINGS!! Although harmless, it can very embarrassing to talk about or show people. The way I treat my KP is to use a loofah or glove in the shower along with some hydrating cleanser (I use Dove body wash for sensitive skin) to exfoliate the area for about 2-3 minutes. The loofah/glove needs to have exfoliating power, the soft stuff won't do you any good. Be careful not to over scrub to avoid drying out your skin. An easier (and possibly expensive) alternative to the loofah or glove is using an electric exfoliate (picture below). After you've completed, pat the area(s) dry with a towel (do not scrub because your skin my be sensitive after) and immediate apply a hydrating moisturizer on the area(s). The reason this works is because you are scrubbing off the skin that is clogging the pores causing them to be irritated, thus causing them to be red and sometimes itchy/irritated. I found that if I kept up with this routine 2-3 times a week, my KP started to look and feel much better. I was so proud of it that I showed off my smooth skin to everyone who would listen. I have to say my boyfriend and friends got quite annoyed of me...but I didn't care because for the first time, since I could remember, I HAD SMOOTH SKIN!

There are so many other potions, lotions, and ointments out there that is designed to treat KP such as Neutrogena Skin Smoothing lotion and DermDoctor's KP Duty. I also noticed on the show, there was some sort of cover up cream with a light tint so the KP was not so noticeable, I forgot to make note of it though. I haven't tried any of the lotions because they can be quite costly and I found my way as the most economic. If anyone has tried any of the products, I would love to hear what your experience was! My method may not work for everyone since the severity of the condition varies so much. I figured that I would share what works for me so some of you might know that there is some hope. Although there is no absolute cure for the condition, there are things to make it more manageable.

I received this raving review on my brushes last month and I have been so busy that I haven't had a chance to share it with you guys. I am still waiting to get a picture and biography from this person so I can give credit where it is due.
Here's the story:
My dear friend and makeup artist, Thucelle Pham, met the Head Makeup Artist, Leah, on the set of "It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia" and introduced her to my line of brushes. We sent her the 16 piece synthetic set to try out and we sincerely appreciate her taking the time to review our product. Here is what she had to say:

THIS IS CONFIDENTIAL..........

Not really because I want to shout from the rooftops so all my fellow makeup artists and makeup lovers will hear how much I love my Confidential brushes from Elle Bang. Their sleek design, those smooth red handles and the AMAZING synthetic bristles, I'm hooked and need to double up.
The brushes come in their own classy case which is great for travel and individual clients. I'm finding that my hand is reaching for the Confidential brushes over my other brushes for several reasons. The bristles really hold their shape use after use, cleaning after cleaning. I also love how much product they pick up and hold on to. This isn't your average brush that drops half the pigment on the way to the face. These brushes seem to cling to pigment until they gently deposit onto skin, fanning out and doing half the blending for you. I love this because I have to use half the product I normally would.

I love the big soft powder brushes, the blush brush and fan brush. Blush never looked so natural applied with this fan brush!! The graduated tapered brushes are now a necessity for me, I can use them for either eye shadow application, crème eye shadow application as well as detailed concealer work. The synthetic fibers lend themselves to many applications and products.

All the brushes are shining stars in their own right but two really stand out for me. The lip brush is Fantastic!! I've used it at least 50 times and not a single stray hair! I do believe the days of one fiber destroying my perfect lip are over. The bristles taper up from the brush handle ensuring flawless application. I am also totally in love with the eyeliner brush, which also has no stray hairs! It is a very thin delicate brush that is perfect for applying the thinnest line of color up against the lash line, mmmm I almost start drooling over the though of it's precision.

Talent is one thing, good tools are everything. I'm so thankful to add the Confidential brush set to my arsenal and suggest anyone serious about pristine makeup application do the same.

Sorry I've been so flaky about posting blogs! I've been busy moving and things have been hectic at EB! So for the new year, I plan to add emphasis on health and fitness as well as beauty products! I will also be on top of the Favorites of the Week!
Now for the New Years Resolutions! ha ha...
My New Year's Resolution is to get back in shape. Since starting the company, and among other things, I plan to get back into my workout routines. Last year, my goal was to lose some weight and I met my goal by losing 15lbs. I did this by eating less red meat and getting on an exercise routine. Towards the end of this year (of course with the holiday season!) I haven't been able to find time for myself to work out. I'm going to overcome this problem by ACTUALLY scheduling the workout into my book.

Hey Guys,

I've been super busy with new projects in the works! Currently getting ready for a presentation at San Jose City College Cosmetology School. I'll be introducing my new line to cosmetology students and I'm so nervous. I've got all my information, handouts, ect. ready but I always feel nervous when I speak in front of an audience. Wish me luck!!

So here's what's going on for the holidays:

I'm doing a collaboration with a good friend on creating a Special edition holiday travel set. Included will be your essential brushes in a hand made pouch. Very cute. Pictures of the set is to follow since we haven't worked out the details yet. Also coming are more individual brushes, promotions from makeup Guru Miss RenRen. I'm totally loving her new tutorial of the mermaid makeup. Very hot colors!!!

In the works are new ad promotions as we collaborate with local talent. We've been busy brainstorming about photo shoot ideas. Also, keep your eyes and ears out for our head Makeup Artist Thucelle Pham's magazine interview. Its going to be really cool!

Lately I've been dealing with some skin issues and I just wanted to talk more about it with you guys. I have a bad habit of falling asleep with my makeup on! So...of course my skin has been breaking out and is dry. I have to say I've been very fortunate to have minimum break outs despite the abuse my skin has endured. You forget that acne is not just for teenagers and happens to us throughout our life times. My usual break outs are along the hairline (from product build up and makeup) as well as the nose area. Areas such as the forehead, nose, and chin (also known as the T-zone) tends to be the most common areas where oil is present and can clog pores. Avoid picking acne because they WILL GET WORSE! Another reason why you don't want to pick at your acne is because they will scare and grow darker, especially if you do not wear sunscreen.

I remember in high school having a small pimple on my upper lip and it was so ugly I decided to pop and pick it out. The next day, my pimple was raging mad and became this nasty mountain. I had to walk around school for a whole week with a monster on my face. Lesson to be learned!

Reasons for acne:

Things to do to avoid acne:

Avoid touching your face throughout the day. Our hands touch ATM machines, money, community telephones, shopping carts, and door knobs EVERYDAY. If you don't want the dirt, grease, and germs from your hands getting on your delicate face, try not to touch your face unless you wash your hands. Keep your skin clean and dirt free! Also, keep your makeup tools clean and sanitized at all times. You can get acne from dirty sponges and brushes. You want to find a cleaner that cleans, conditions, and most importantly SANITIZE.

I have also found that drinking plenty of water, exercising, and minimal caffeine intake does help you get that natural glow. Most people forget to drink water and they drink energy drinks, soda, or coffee instead. This will make your body work harder by filtering out the unnecessary "junk" just to get the hydration it needs to keep your skin healthy. Your skin is 70% water, not coffee-not soda. I strongly believe if you treat your body well, it will return the favor and it will definitely show.

For severe cases of acne, do not hesitate to go to your dermatologist. It may be quite an expense but I totally think it's worth every penny. You need to see a specialist who can guide you to your journey of getting the skin you deserve. There is a great variety of services and products that can fix almost any skin condition. You need to know if you are taking the proper steps to taking care of your skin. The dermatologist will be able to help find out if it is hormonal, stress, or environmental reasons.

Always keep your skin clean and moisturized. Protect your skin with a light oil free sunscreen at all times. You can avoid acne from ruining your special date/event or just your everyday sexy self.

I went to Wal-Mart to pick up some products to help me get the skin that I want. I picked up some face wipes so that I can conveniently remove my makeup if in case I'm too tired to get up. I also picked up some night eye cream to hopefully reduce the signs of aging for the next years to come! (Note: I'm on the prevention plan since I've turned 25y/o yesterday).

#1 OCC Airbrush Pigment

Being a "new-bee" at airbrushing and totally loving the new found technique, I was introduced by makeup guru, Ms. RenRen , to OCC airbrushing products. What I absolutely love is it comes in sample bottles for a very reasonable price. This way I am able to try which product I like, giving me the opportunity to buy my color. Also, if you are doing makeup application on others, this gives you variety at a fraction of the cost! Similar to other lines, they have foundations ranging from yellow based and red based skin tones (which is great for those harder to match). I purchased the red based, yellow based, and blush/shimmer sample size for $25.00 each kit. Switching from the Luminess airbrush foundation to the OCC Skin product, I noticed that the OCC Skin product goes on matte so no need for finishing powder. The Luminess foundation leaves you very shiney so you MUST put powder on afterwards. The Luminess blush/shimmer is has a lot of pigment so it's easy to put too much (very clown-like at times). Alternatively, the OCC brand achieve a nice glow and the color is very natural.

Why this is the best? Saves you the extra step of adding setting powder, goes on very matte and provides great coverage.

This stuff is awesome!! Just dip your makeup brush in this liquid goodness and you've got dramatic color. You can use this on any press powder, loose powder or glitter to achieve that eye popping look! Picture of this stuff in action is coming soon!!

Best thing about this product is it doesn't come off easily. I have tons of bare essential eyeshadows at home that I do not use because the color seems to fade throughout the day (even if I use a primer). So I will be working with my old eyeshadows to see what I can come up with. Hopefully I can do a video to show you but I've been SOOO busy working on my website and planning out events for my line of cosmetic brushes! More things to come in the near future! #1 Bobby Brown Cream Corrector -My shade : peach

I couldn't find a girl friend to go shopping with this weekend so I decided to drag my best friend & boyfriend to Nordstrom for a Bobby Brown "driveby." As some of you may or may not notice, I am totally a Nordstrom lover!!!!

I have been using the concealing pots from MAC for so long that I haven't looked around for bigger and better things. I was content with it but honestly the coverage was lacking for my dark (genetic) bags. After seeing makeup guru RenRen's video on covering dark circles I decided to join the Bobby Brown corrector club and try out their FAMOUS correctors. The color I picked out was light peach and peach...the light peach was a little too light for my skin color so I went with peach instead. I didn't realize the how GREAT the coverage was until I walked into the sunglass store that had big mirrors and nice lighting. The coverage was very nice and left me looking fresh and awake. If you have dark circles like me, please try this product!! Too bad I had to order it since they didn't have it in the store....I guess they ARE selling like hot cakes!

#2 Jemma Kidd Tech Liquid Liner Collection. My fav. shades: covert & abstract

I have had these for a while and haven't had a chance to share how much I love these things. These liquid liners DO NOT SMEAR or go anywhere. I sometimes use it for my lower lash line so that my eye pops but I've been experimenting on how it would look on both top and bottom and I have to say that it looks great!! What I do is put black eyeliner on first then I add the liquid liner. I'm planning to order the the same liner in "darma." Get them at your local Target store or order online at target.com. They run about $18.00 (a little pricey for Target, but it will last you along time.

Foundation 101

Choosing the right color is probably one of THE hardest things to do when you are first starting out. Here are a few tips to get the flawless skin that you deserve!

The best area to test the foundation is the jawline (not the wrist or arm) that way your foundation will blend in with your neck. Avoid the two-tone look so BLEND BLEND BLEND!! Choose (or have a makeup artist choose) a few shades that you feel closest to your skin tone. Next apply them vertically on your jawline about half an inch from each color so that you can see the difference between them. The foundation you choose should look almost invisible to insure that in blends with your skin tone. And if you are not sure, please do not hesitate to ask for help. The last thing you want to do is to buy something that doesn't work for you. Another option is apply at the store and go home to think about whether you really like the way it feels and looks. Some people also develop allergic reactions to certain ingredients in the foundations. Avoid foundations that make you red, itchy, or break out. Depending on your skin type choose the type of foundation wisely : sheer foundation, liquid foundation, cake foundation, and cream foundation.

Here is the breakdown:

Sheer foundation:

This type of foundation is very light and is ideal for those who want minimal coverage and just need help evening out the overal color. Examples of the sheer foundation would be the Bare Mineral Foundation made from powder that is buildable coverage that is sheer. I did use this product for a LONG time and it seem to get the job done but after experimenting with other products I realized that I prefer the liquid foundation for my skin (because I have dry skin) and the liquid gives me more of a healthy shine that I like. Overall Bare Minerals is a very good product.

Liquid foundation:

General found in a bottle in liquid form (hence the name) and ranges from light-medium-heavy coverage. This works well for those who have dry skin and mature skin. If you have oily skin than it tends to make you look shiney so that means lots of touch ups during the day. As I mentioned before, one of my favorite liquid foundations so far is the Forever Makeup HD Foundation (read below for further details).

Cake Foundation
Usually found in a compact or stick form and gives a great deal of coverage because of the intense color/pigments in the foundation. Many artist prefer this for people with dark & oily skin types. You can use a small amount of it and it won't melt off the skin. One thing that I hate about this type of foundation is if you accidentally leave your makeup bag/purse in the car, it WILL melt everywhere (I live in California so it gets hot!!) And at that point your only option is to throw it away and buy another one AND try to salvage whatever else it got on.

Cream Foundation
This type of foundation tends to be packaged in pots or tubes and also has a heavy consistancy. Cream foundations can create medium to heavy coverage and is best for those who have dry and combonation skin. Less really goes a long way with this type of foundation.

Moisturizer:

Seal in glowing skin with a light mosturizer with SPF (if possible) during the day time and a treatment mosturizer for evening time. Recommended application is applying in a circular motion and don't forget the neck area!! Sunscreen:

#1 Makeup Forever Professional HD Foundation

Shade 128

Half a pump of this baby is all I need for everyday coverage. This stuff is great because it's got a lot of pigment which covers up the imperfections but makes your skin look silky smooth without trying too hard. This bottle will last me a long time because a little really goes a long way. I use to use one pump when I first got it but finally realized that it makes me look too cakey and I end up wasting a lot of foundation.

I bought it at Sephora during the spring and had to buy another shade darker because it soon was TOO LIGHT since summer came so fast! So...make sure you test it out at the stores first because you don't want to make the $40.00 mistake like ME!!

So I got a full sized tube when I purchased the exclusive Smashbox Makeup Set from Nordstrom. At first, I thought the bristles were TOO BIG but after using it for a few weeks I found that the application is smooth dispite the gigantic applicator. I usually apply two coats, wait for it to dry, then curl---I have short, straight asian lashes! So far no problems with SMUDGING, SMEARING, or CLUMPING. Luminess Air Brush System

I got my system in yesterday and tested it out. So far, I've found that shade #6 works out well for me and the bronzer is very shimmery. I didn't have a problem with blotchiness since I made sure that I didn't press down too much on the lever, however I did add too much bronzer on my cheeks which I had to wipe off. Be sure to apply your makeup in a well lit lighting I walked outside and THEN realized how much bronzer I had on. Video is to come soon, been busy with a lot of work and family business.

I just ordered these items this week and expect them next week. The SmashBox collection was very tempting because of the warm fall colors in the eyeshadow pallet. I will publish some photos for your review once I play with the colors this weekend!

I was watching the HSN late Sunday night and saw them promoting LUMINUSS AIR BRUSH STARTER KIT. I've always wanted to have my own airbrushing unit for special events or photoshoots, I should get it next week Thursday, look out for my video review! It's suppose to give you this very smooth finish covering up wrinkles, blemishes, and dark circles (arrg...dark circles are the worse!!!) I will have a video on it's features and how it applies. I am very excited and hope that it's all they have hyped it up to be. I've looked at the very tempting competitor TEMPTU airbrushing unit exclusively sold at Sephora but they don't have a sample of the foundation so you know what is your best shade. The Luminuss brand comes with four foundation samples, blush, and highlighters. This allows you to try what you like and what to buy when you area done with the samples. Temptu expects you to spend $$ on a full size when you don't even know what your actual color is.
